Congratulations, Kwame Dawes! The National Library of Jamaica has announced that he will be Jamaica’s new Poet Laureate. Often called “the busiest man in literature,” Kwame is the author of 20 books of poetry and numerous other books of fiction, criticism, and essays. We featured him as our 32 Bar Blues Voice of the Art several years ago – which led to our partnership with the nonprofit African Poetry Book Fund during the Holiday 2020 season.
Realizing the limited opportunities for the publishing of books by poets across the continent of Africa, Kwame founded the APBF in 2014 to promote and advance the development and publication of the poetic arts of Africa. Through book publication, workshops, seminars and contests as well as collaborations with publishers, booking agents, colleges and universities, Kwame and his editorial board have published numerous African poets from Africa and her worldwide diaspora in spectacular books of elegant design.
